The first time I saw this film's ending, I didn't understand a thing. I thought that they should've said something, or just tried to keep themselves together somehow. But it's not a farytale history. Now I think that he just tries to tell her that she is not alone in that mess.
Pitifully, I've had to see the video without sound because that I'm in Terrassa!
He feels like her and likes stay there with her. But as you says, this is not a farytale history. When I saw the film I didn't understand the words that he whispered in her ear. Words are nearly symbolic, they aren't necessary for understand the ending. It's beautiful.
I like "Pitifully". A few days ago I learnt "Pity's for Pity's sake".
